Our Mission

Advancing Digital Inclusion in Communities Around the World

In today's digital world, we believe connectivity and skills are a fundamental right, yet 30% of people remain offline. Connectivity is central to Equinix’s strategy and the Equinix Foundation’s mission. Everyone deserves the chance to learn, work, connect, and thrive in a digitally empowered world. When everything is connected, anything is possible.

Frequently asked questions about Equinix Foundation
How does the Equinix Foundation select its nonprofit partners?

The Foundation does not currently accept unsolicited grant applications. Grant partnership decisions are guided by the Equinix Foundation’s Board of Directors, with input from local Equinix leadership and WeAreEquinix volunteer teams, as well as customer and partner referrals. This collaborative approach ensures that every partnership aligns with the Foundation’s charitable mission and reflects the priorities of the communities where Equinix operates.

What criteria does the Foundation use to evaluate potential partners?

We evaluate every partnership opportunity against several key areas:

  • Mission alignment: Does the organization primarily work to advance digital inclusion or improve data center sustainability?
  • Demonstrated impact: Can the organization show measurable outcomes?
  • Scalability and sustainability: Is the work designed to grow and endure beyond our support?
  • Geographic relevance: Does the organization operate in or serve communities where Equinix has a strong presence, including engaged leadership and employee volunteers?
  • Communities served: Is the organization serving a community that is marginalized in some way.
How does the Foundation measure the impact of its partnerships?

Our assessment framework aligns with the Foundation’s Theory of Change model that looks at both program outcomes and broader systemic change. We ask: Are we helping close the digital divide in meaningful, lasting ways?

We also evaluate the health of each partnership itself, including employee engagement levels, mutual learning, the quality of collaboration, and whether programs are positioned to sustain impact beyond our support.

What qualities matter most in a nonprofit partner?

We look for organizations with a clear vision, measurable goals, and a proven track record of creating meaningful change for and with the communities they serve. Strong mission alignment and demonstrated community impact are essential.

How does the Foundation engage Equinix employees in its work?

Employee involvement is at the heart of everything we do. The Foundation was built on the passion of Equinix employees, and they continue to shape our direction in several ways:

  • WeGive: Our core employee-led initiative, where local WeAreEquinix teams work with local leadership to identify and support nonprofit organizations in their communities.
  • Pathways to Tech: Employees volunteer to educate young people about careers in the data center industry through school visits, facility tours, and education days, helping to improve economic opportunity for marginalized communities as well as broaden and diversify the pipeline of talent going into high-growth tech careers.
  • WeSkill: Our skills-based volunteer program where employees contribute their professional expertise through mentoring, technical guidance, and leadership development with our nonprofit partners.
  • Matching Gifts: The Foundation matches employee charitable contributions, amplifying the personal giving of our workforce.
  • Board and Leadreship Team Service: The Foundation is governed by Equinix senior leadership and supported by dozens of employees across the company who volunteer their time as Board Members, Management Team Members, and/or Committee Members.

This localized and cross-functional employee-driven model ensures our grant partnerships are grounded in real community relationships, not just boardroom decisions.

Does the Foundation provide support beyond financial grants?

Yes, this is core to our strategy. In addition to the many ways that employee volunteers contribute their time, expertise, and advocacy to support our nonprofit partners, the Foundation leverages Equinix technology resources, data center space, and our global network of customers and partners to help nonprofits scale their impact. By combining financial support with other assets, expertise, and resources across Equinix, we aim to build deeper, more sustainable partnerships that drive lasting change.
